You come across them every once in awhile on your wedding planning journey: “Ten things Your Wedding Planner (or photographer or florist or, yes, even your stationer) wishes they could tell you”. The things they want to tell you are usually not particularly happy thoughts. This is not one of those lists.
This is the five reasons why working with a small independent designer (like me!) is one of the BEST choices you can make when planning your wedding….
5. We try harder -seriously.
Colors, fonts, text…. Personally, I don’t mind customizing your paper goods. Obviously I like my designs or I wouldn’t put them out there, but ultimately, these are your invitations, not mine. I want you to be happy! If you aren’t, I want the opportunity to make you happy!
4. We offer unique items.
Go ahead….visit one of the “big box” invitation sites. Do your eyes start to cross after a few pages, or even worse, after a few sites? See almost the same exact items on multiple sites? The reason for that is that these sites (and some smaller) are often creating from a catalog, based on whatever is “trendy” this season.
I create from my imagination. Naturally, I am also sometimes influenced by trends (hello watercolor, I love you), but I work hard to keep things unique and a little different from the herd.
3. Sometimes, we cost a little more.
How is that a good thing? Six words: you get what you pay for. I take my work very seriously and I also am a little uptight about quality control (ask my poor in-laws, who often help me with assembly and paper cutting. I know they really want to roll their eyes at me sometimes, and I don’t blame them, but that’s how I am wired. For you, that’s a GOOD thing.). If my invitation costs a little more, it’s because a ton of work and love (and high quality supplies) goes into each piece. For example, this invitation….
There are about 30 individual steps involved to create this one invitation set. That does not include the original designing of the invitation (for this one, that took about 20 hours spread out over several days to get the dimensions and images, colors and text placement just so, source supplies, take photos, etc.) or the multiple steps required with each couple on digital proofing. Yes, it costs a little more, but there’s an amazingly good chance you will blow the socks off your guests because this is not a “big box” , cookie cutter invitation. There’s an even better chance that they have never seen this invitation anywhere. That’s what an independent designer can do for you!
2. You GET more for that higher price tag.
High quality card stock, high end laser printing. Meticulous quality control. Personal customer service that I would want to receive myself. I am a BIG fan of the Golden Rule.
1. You get ME, every single time you make contact.
I will admit it, I am just one person, with a few elves (see eye-rolling in-laws, above) who help me with assembly and packaging. You may have to wait a few days for my response to an email or for a photo or a digital proof. I do not have an assistant to do any of these things for me. It can be frustrating, and I am probably more aware of that than you are (since I do this every day). Where am I going with this? Yes, it is a slower process to work with me, but you are working with ME. Not an assistant on Monday, me on Wednesday, another assistant on Friday. During busy times, I may be rushing to get an order ahead of yours shipped on time (the reason for my radio silence, most of the time), but the silver lining? Your time to be at the top of that list is quickly approaching and when it does, you are golden (worth the wait, I hope).
So there you have it. Five great reasons to consider independent designers when planning your wedding (or any other big event)!
Until Next Time….
